All research activities within VA facilities are conducted with the approval of the Research & Development (R&D) Committee, following approval by the appropriate review committees.  The committees include these listed below:

• Research & Development Committee
  • Animal Use Subcommittee
  • Subcommittee on Research Safety
  • Human Studies Subcommittee

University Committees

• The R&D Committee entrusts The University of Maryland School of Medicine Institutional Review Board (IRB)* for the review of studies involving human subjects. The Research & Development Committee and the IRB have the responsibility of insuring that research involving human subjects is conducted under the most rigorous ethical standards that assure the protection of the rights, welfare, and safety of the veteran patients.
  
  Approval of a project by the IRB indicates conformity with the Federal Guidelines for Studies Involving Human Subjects known as VHA Handbook 1200.5, Requirements for the Protection of Human Subjects in Research.
  
  
• The R&D Committee entrusts The University of Maryland School of Medicine Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)* for the review of studies involving animal subjects.
